Short description
The gardens of this large Victorian, Italianate, classical style house were first designed in the early 19th century. The pleasure gardens have been restored in the last 7 years.
Description
A large Victorian house built in an austere, Italianate, classical style, granite faced, it was commissioned by Robert Westley Hall-Dare and built to the design of Sir Charles Lanyon. The house was built on the site of the Maxwell-Barry house, Woodfield.
The gardens were first designed in the early 19th century and later developed by the Hall-Dares. The pleasure gardens originally comprised about 35 acres and the sunken garden, rose garden and gardens surrounding the lake have been restored in the last six years. The origins of the sunken garden predate the present house. There are many very fine old trees and also a large working farm.
