Enniscoe Gardens

There are 3 garden areas, following the traditional pattern found on many country estates laid out in the 18th and 19th centuries. The great garden walls date from mid 18th century but traces of the original garden have gone. Within the walled gardens are:

The Ornamental Garden.

This was formed in the 1870’s when a dividing wall was built across the original garden area contained within the great garden walls. It was developed and maintained by 3 generations of the family but fell into decline in the 1970’s and 80’s. It has now been restored under the Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Scheme, and is open to the public from April to October.

The Organic Garden.

This area was used as a fruit and vegetable garden for the family from the 1870’s onwards. Again, it fell into disuse in the 1970’s. In 1994 the garden was made available to local community groups. It is run today as an organic market garden, supplying fruit and vegetables in the locality, and running training courses.

Pleasure Grounds and Mausoleum.

The grounds, which consist of approximately 4 acres of mature hardwood trees and shrubs, were developed around an early 19th century mausoleum. There are numerous paths through this area that lead to the forest walks laid out along the lakeshore.

Forest Walks and Nature Trails.

The old woodlands are planted with hardwood incorporating forest walks and nature open to the public. The Tree Council of Ireland and Mitsubishi Electric in celebration of Mayo 5000 have planted another ten acres.

French Avenue

The road at the back of Enniscoe House is today known as "The French Avenue". It got this name when General Humbert and his army of soldiers, after landing at Kilcummin near Killala in August 1798, proceeded to march from Ballina and down this road.

Blacksmithing

"Forging Links" is the title of our blacksmithing project. A series of blacksmithing courses are run by a qualified blacksmith with years of experience in this ancient craft in the purpose built forge which is part of the heritage centre complex. The courses are open to everyone, male and female, and no previous experience is necessary. Next course October 2008.
