Continuing their programme of gardening activities at the National Trust’s Springhill estate, pupils from Moneymore Primary School were visited by David Hawthorne, the Trust’s Farm & Countryside Advisor, to demonstrate how to plant and arrange a rotation of organic vegetables in four raised beds.
The children were interested in all aspects of learning about growing their own food as part of the series of visits to Springhill in Sophie’s Secret Garden Project. They measured out the distance between the seeds, checking the depth and distance between the plants and planted out seedling modules of lettuce which they had sown a month ago. Weeding the potato bed was also a major task as well as planting peas and broad beans.
David is also working with St. Patricks Primary School, Moneymore where the children will be planting out their beds of seedlings, located in the walled garden at Springhill in the coming weeks.
The series of gardening visits by the children will culminate in a parents’ day and cook-in of the produce grown.
The National Trust’s Northern Ireland education programme is supported by the Department of Education and the BT Community Partnership Programme.
Why not call in to Springhill and check how they’re doing?
