Short description
One of the best collections of rare and unusual trees and shrubs in Ireland, a 20 acre garden at the end of a spectacular tree lined avenue.
Description
The house, built in c.1838 stands at the end of one of the most spectacular avenues to be found in the Ireland. A fantastic display of spring bulbs, snowdrops, daffodils, and bluebells gives way later to rhododendrons and azaleas in June. Two recently created lakes are surrounded by wildflowers and are stocked with fish.
The garden has probably the best and most unusual collection of trees and shrubs planted in Ireland in the last 40 years. An arboretum was added in the late 1970's. It is currently being extended. A series of meandering paths through the garden creates surprises around every corner. Springtime is a very exciting time in the garden, magnolias, camellias, and many other plants compete to catch your attention. From mid summer the border along the main lawn and greenhouses gives a wonderful display of colour. Greenhouses contain peaches, nectarines, apricots, and grapes amongst other fruits. The onset of winter is heralded by a magnificent array of autumn colours from the spectacular to the subtle. It is hard to know when the garden is at its best . There is something of interest at all times of the year.
A small private church on the grounds, still in regular use, with a lovely round tower is surrounded by a small moat in a woodland setting. It has been used as a film location. It is available for hire for weddings if requested.
Coolcarrigan is a ' little hidden oasis' to quote many of our visitors.
