Short description
Russborough, often regarded as the most beautiful house in Ireland, was built for Joseph Leeson, later Earl of Milltown. Building began in 1741 and took ten years to complete.
Description
Russborough, often regarded as the most beautiful house in Ireland. It was built between 1741 and 1750 in the Palladian style by Richard Castle (also known as Cassells) and displays fine stucco ceilings by the Lanfranchini brothers, marvellous plasterwork and a wonderful mahogany staircase. It has magnificent view of the Blessington Lakes and the Wicklow mountains beyond.
In 1978 Sir Alfred Beit opened the house to the public for guided tours. The house which is beautifully maintained and lavishly furnished contains fine furniture, tapestries, carpets, porcelain, silver and much of the Beit collection of fine art. In the last 30 years over 1 million guests have availed of the guided tour provided by our excellent local guides.
For the more energetic there are parkland walks around the estate which proved wonderful views of Rossborough. For the most adventurous there is a 20,000 sq.ft Beech hedge Maze to navigate (but remember to ask reception for a Maze map!) The design of the Maze conceals a clue to the identity of its original designer since Sir Alfred Beit's family were early pioneers in the world diamond industry. A statute of Cupid stands on a column at the centre, tantalisingly indicating the goal from all parts of the Maze.
There is a recently extended craft & gift shop including various Russborough branded gifts as well as the Kitchen Garden Cafe for all kings of snacks and hot and cold lunches. All food is home made on the premises. Ideal for individuals and groups alike.
